The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button

I didn’t even know of this movies existence until a few days before its release. I heard the song Move On by Joell Ortiz ft. Joe Budden, where Budden spits the clever line, “I’m on my grind, benjamin huntin/ Was old since I was young, call me Benjamin Button“. Of course I didn’t understand the line at first, but me being me, I quickly searched google to see who he was referring to, and stumbled on the trailer. I was pretty intrigued by the concept of the movie, and very interested to see exactly how they were going to execute it. I finally got a chance to see the movie, and here’s my thoughts.

Agentspits Review of “The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button

The movie is pretty long, at almost 3 hours in duration, and I did feel like it could have been shorter, but I can’t say it was a waste of my time to watch it. It moved slow at times, but it kept a decent pace when covering his life during the different stages. Overall I’d say it was a good movie, but I went into it expecting a masterpiece, and it didn’t deliver one. I had assumed the story was gonna focus more on his condition itself, and how he lived with it, but it was more of a love story. Now I’m not anti-love story  in movies, but I don’t feel like we got to know “Benjamin”, or the other characters well enough to invoke any strong emotions towards the story, or maybe I just wasn’t paying enough attention. I liked when he was the young creepy looking old guy the best, cause it was something I had never seen before, and it was interesting. People are making a lot of comparisons to Forrest Gump, and to me it’s kind of annoying to hear people make comparisons, instead of judging the movie as it’s own, but the similarities are clearly there. Not to mention the screenplay for both movies was written by the same guy. I think if I watched this movie one more time, I could appreciate it a little more, but that won’t be happening anytime soon. I would say if you got 10 bucks to spare, and want to see a good movie, head to the theaters to see it, just try not to go in with any expectations like I did. Also, if you already have it in your head that it’s a long movie, then it’s probably gonna feel that way. If you’re interested in reading the short story this movie was adapted from, you can buy it from Amazon, or read it here, or download it as a PDF here.
